Your Pregnancy Safe Skincare Guide: The Dos, Don'ts & The Brand Mums Love

Pregnancy-safe skincare might not be the first thing on your mind when you see those two lines — but after heartburn remedies and a decent maternity bra, we promise you, it's seriously under rated pregnancy hero.

At the time of writing, I’m a mum-of-two, five weeks postpartum with my second baby — and I’ll admit, it wasn’t until midway through that pregnancy that I learnt the importance of pregnancy-safe skincare.

So, let's get cracking on what to use –and what not to–while you're cleansing, toning and moisturising for two.

A new 2025 report found that up to 90% of pregnant women experience skin changes — ranging from normal physiological alterations to flare-ups of pre-existing conditions or pregnancy-specific dermatoses.

So, why had no one told me about this?

‘Honestly, skincare is one of those areas that many maternity professionals aren’t  trained in or wouldn't routinely discuss,’ says Professor Caitriona Ryan, Consultant Dermatologist Advisor for SKN TO SKN

‘Skincare routines have become far more sophisticated over the past few decades, with a surge in active ingredients and targeted treatments. This has created more choice than ever, but also more confusion — especially during pregnancy and postpartum.

The key is to simplify pregnancy beauty routines without compromising results, and to offer evidence-based guidance that helps women feel both safe and confident in what they’re using on their skin — especially in pregnancy and postpartum.’

Pregnancy Safe Skincare: the basics

‘Pregnancy skin can be unpredictable,’ says Professor Ryan.‘Some women glow, while others face breakouts, melasma, or sensitivity.

The key is to keep your routine gentle and barrier-supportive, while choosing ingredients that are safe and effective. Many products are fine under normal circumstances, but pregnancy calls for more selectivity.'

So, while your makeup bag probably contains pregnancy safe makeup, your bathroom cabinet is a whole different story.

Common Skin Concerns in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a hormonal rollercoaster — and not one you can simply get off once the baby arrives.

Each trimester brings new hormonal shifts, and while there’s a sense of what’s “normal”, every woman reacts differently — just like in puberty. That makes it nearly impossible to predict exactly how your skin will behave or when.

Let's run through some of the changes - and challenges - you might experience.

RECOMMENDED DAILY PRODUCT

  • Pregnancy-safe daily moisturiser with mineral SPF 30.
  • Lightweight and non-greasy.
  • Available in in two sheer tints.

Breakouts

As oestrogen and progesterone levels surge during pregnancy, your oil glands can go into overdrive — leading to congestion and breakouts on the surface of the skin.

These can appear in specific areas — like just the forehead or chin — or across the entire face. Some women even experience breakouts on the body, including the bum, due to hormonal shifts.

Hyperpigmentation

During pregnancy, melanin — the pigment that gives skin its colour and helps protect against sun damage — can suddenly increase.

This spike can cause hyperpigmentation, often called the ‘pregnancy mask’ — where areas of the face become darker or patchy in appearance. Oh hi, new hairless moustache.

Some women also notice an overall darkening of the skin, sometimes referred to as a ‘pregnancy tan’, as skin may become more sensitive to sunlight.

Stretch marks

As your body grows, stretch marks can appear where the skin stretches faster than it can keep up — causing small tears in the dermal layer.

Genetics play a big role in where (and whether) you get them. Skin elasticity and hormonal changes are also major factors, and many of these are beyond your control.

That said, you can help reduce their severity by staying hydrated and regularly massaging your skin with a pregnancy-friendly moisturiser to support elasticity and suppleness.

Dry skin

As if heartburn, cramps and nausea weren’t enough, pregnancy can also make your skin more sensitive — thanks to hormonal shifts and lower hydration levels.

This increased sensitivity means your skin may react more strongly to certain ingredients or sunlight, causing dry skin in pregnancy, itchiness, flakiness, or even sunburn.

That’s why it’s so important to check the skincare you’re using. Some products contain chemicals that may irritate rather than soothe already sensitive skin.

What Ingredients to Avoid in Pregnancy Skincare

After hearing all the above about how sensitive our skin is in pregnancy, it might inspire a “go natural” instinct, but not everything from our skincare needs to go in the bin.

Here’s your “red list” of ingredients to look out for - and avoid.

Skincare ingredients to avoid in pregnancy 👎🏼

The no-go trio

Retinoids: Dermatologists recommend steering clear of retinoids — found in many anti-ageing creams — due to links with foetal development risks.

Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid often found in exfoliators, can increase the risk of intracranial bleeding in pregnancy.

Benzoyl peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is often used to treat acne and breakouts and is best avoided in pregnancy because absorption can be higher if the skin is broken or irritated - like it is in pregnancy. It can also irritate the skin rather than soothe it.

Other skincare to avoid

Certain essential oils, such as rosemary or sage, are surprisingly potent and can trigger uterine contractions in pregnancy, and irritate the skin.

Sun protection: Sunscreen should is the best accessory to any maternity holiday clothes, but it's best to avoid chemical filters in suncream like oxybenzone. Instead look for sun creams without this ingredient and opt for mineral sunscreens that sit on the skin rather than absorbing into it. It’s important to wear spf in pregnancy to protect sensitive skin.

Skincare ingredients that are safe in pregnancy 🙌🏽

Niacinamide: This one safely soothes irritation, helps even out skin tone and reduces patchiness.

Hyaluronic acid: With skin’s dryness at an all time high, this wonder ingredient isn’t too abrasive and delivers deep hydration without irritation.

Azelaic acid: Another acid that gently tackles both acne and pigmentation in pregnancy by countering or neutralising free radicals that cause our skin damage.

Vitamin C: Offers a pregnancy-friendly route to brightness, helping you get back that “glow” that can often feel lost during pregnancy.

Zinc oxide: For sun protection, zinc oxide is your gold standard — non-irritating, non-absorbing and perfect for sensitive skin plagued by pregnancy hormones.

Adjusting Your Skincare for Each Trimester

Just like your energy, emotions, and bump size, your skin changes throughout pregnancy — so your skincare should too.

A large 2025 review found that hyperpigmentation affects up to 90% of pregnant women, while stretch marks (striae gravidarum) occur in 60–90% of pregnancies and can impact body image, emotional wellbeing, and social confidence.

There’s no magic wand — but knowing what to expect, and adjusting your skincare each trimester, is a powerful first step in supporting your skin (and yourself) through the changes.

What to use in trimester 1

In the first 12 weeks, skin is often at its most sensitive. Strip your routine back to the basics: a gentle, pregnancy-safe cleanser, barrier-protecting moisturiser, and daily SPF to minimise irritation.

What to use in trimester 2

By the second trimester, things often start to settle — and increased blood volume can give skin that so-called pregnancy glow.

But with circulation up, your sebaceous glands may become more active, making skin feel oilier. While this can ease dryness, it may also trigger breakouts if you're acne-prone.

Keep your routine balanced with a gentle, pregnancy-safe cleanser to stay fresh without stripping your skin.

What to use in trimester 3

In the third trimester, melanin production naturally increases, which can lead to chloasma — also known as the "mask of pregnancy".

To help minimise pigmentation, wear a pregnancy-safe SPF daily, even when it’s cloudy. As your skin stretches, keep it well moisturised to stay comfortable and supported.

Keep your routine balanced with a gentle, pregnancy-safe cleanser to stay fresh without stripping your skin.

So now you’re clued up on the yeses and nos of pregnancy-safe skincare — but let’s be real, who has time to memorise the red list or decode every label while growing a human?

That’s exactly why skincare lover and mum-of-two Sara Stokes, 36, created SKN TO SKN — a revolutionary new range built on safe, effective ingredients that actually work with pregnancy skin.

Designed to simplify your routine and support skin health through every trimester (and beyond), SKNTOSKN is all about making great skincare easy for mums.

Now available on forthecreators.co, it’s already one of the fastest-growing beauty brands for women — and it’s only just getting started.

My Pregnancy Skincare Routine That Changed Everything

I’ve just finished my second pregnancy and — with a 2.5-year-old toddler in tow — let’s just say self-care was... minimal.

My skincare routine was already inconsistent, and when I fell pregnant again, I honestly worried what that would mean for my skin.

Trimester 1 was tough. The exhaustion hit harder than I expected. There were no afternoon naps like the first time around — I was juggling nursery pick-ups and toddler entertaining until bedtime. My skin got dry, dull, and irritated fast.

By Trimester 2, breakouts started showing up too. I knew I needed to do something — but I also knew I needed it to be easy.

That’s when I found SKN TO SKN — and everything changed.

I’d been Googling and scrolling through social for "pregnancy skincare help" when this brand popped up, promising to simplify skincare for mums. I was in.

Psst: I could go on all day about this brand. If you’re after the full debrief, read our SKN TO SKN review.

“For the first time in two pregnancies, I felt like I had control over my skin — without having to overthink it. ”

My morning game-changers

I started with the SKN TO SKN Balancing Act Gel-to-Oil Cleanser — a pH-balanced cleanser I can use in the shower. I literally slap it on, rinse it off, and get on with my day.

It’s made with virgin maracuja oil, omegas 3, 6 & 9, and vitamin E — all of which help restore and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. Exactly what I needed.

After that, I use the SKN TO SKN Glow & Go Daily Moisturiser — and honestly, it’s become my secret weapon.

It hydrates, adds a hint of glow, and it’s tinted — which means no more faffing with foundation. Bonus: it’s a mineral SPF30, so I’m protected too. I can apply it with one hand if I need to (which, let’s be real, is most mornings).

Night-time skincare (in 60 seconds)

Evenings are less about “rituals” and more about “how fast can I get into bed?” I’ll never sacrifice sleep for skincare — but now, I don’t feel like I have to.

I used to reuse my day moisturiser at night (don’t judge), but it just wasn’t enough.

Now I use the SKN TO SKN Sleep Cheat Night Cream — it promises to deeply hydrate and repair dry, stressed skin while you sleep. Which honestly sounds like it was made for heavily pregnant women trying to juggle work, a toddler, and everything else.

The result?

For the first time in two pregnancies, I felt like I had control over my skin — without having to overthink it. SKN TO SKN made it simple, and that made all the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my skin changing so much during pregnancy?

Hormonal fluctuations increase oil production, sensitivity, and melanin levels. This can lead to dryness, breakouts, or pigmentation (like melasma). Everyone’s skin reacts differently — it’s normal, and usually temporary.

What skincare ingredients should I avoid during pregnancy?

The main ones to avoid are retinoids (vitamin A derivatives), high-dose salicylic acid, hydroquinone, and some essential oils or chemical sunscreens. These ingredients may pose risks or irritate sensitive pregnancy skin. Always check labels and speak to your healthcare provider if unsure.

Can I keep using my vitamin C serum while pregnant?

Yes! Vitamin C is safe to use during pregnancy and is great for brightening skin and supporting collagen production. Just pair it with a good SPF, or moisturiser with SPF like SKN to SKN Daily Moisturiser with SPF 30 as it can make your skin more sun-sensitive.

What’s the best skincare routine for pregnancy?

Keep it simple and gentle. A good routine includes:

  • A pregnancy-safe cleanser

  • A hydrating moisturiser

  • A broad-spectrum mineral SPF

  • Optional: a serum with safe actives like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid
The key is consistency and choosing products that support the skin barrier.
