hCG roughly doubles every 48–72 hours in very early pregnancy, which is why an early test can show a faint line one day and a clear one two days later. Testing with first morning urine gives the most concentrated sample and the most reliable early result.
A negative result before your period is due doesn't rule pregnancy out — retest in a couple of days if your period hasn't arrived.
